Windham, NY – there’s almost too much outdoor fun here. Located in the Catskill Mountains in Greene County, New York, Windham is 2.5 to 3 hours from New York City (depending on who you talk to and how fast they drive). Year round options for a good time include hiking, skiing, golfing, biking, snowmobiling and horseback riding.
Windham’s most conspicuous attraction is the Windham Mountain Ski Resort. In the winter get your snow bunny on with snow tubing, snowmobiling, snow shoeing ice skating and night skiing as well as downhill, snowboarding and cross country trails. In the summer, the mountain transforms to host events and festivals including the Windham Warrior Dash: a race that describes itself as a ‘mud crawling, fire leaping, extreme 5k run from hell where warriors conquer extreme obstacles, push their limits and celebrate with music, beer and Warrior helmets’. Even if you don’t want to DO that, it’s worth watching! People even dash in costume.
This summer Windham Mountain also hosts the Mountain Bike World Cup as well as offering zipline and skyrides that will continue on through the fall. At the base of the mountain there are several options for temporary, seasonal and permanent residence, so you can hop out of bed and into any of these activities and out again when you feel like some downtime. Down the road from the Mountain is the verdant and expansive Windham Country Club, with a full 18-hole golf course and restaurant.
The village of Windham, NY itself, with its handsome Victorian and turn-of-the-century buildings, is a great place to go grab a bite, a drink or peruse antiques. Drop into the Cave Mountain Brewing Company for a handcrafted brew and some delicious pub fare. Keeping it casual, stop into the Millrock Restaurant for some wood-fired pizza or try Michael’s Diner in the middle of town for American standbys. The quaint Windham Hardware Store is something out of a different era, and is your supply central before heading out into the Great Outdoors.
Set in the Catskill Preserve, the beauty of nature spreads outwards from Windham in every direction. Trails twist through the mountains with trailheads connecting easy day hikes with challenging climbs up and down the mountain peaks. North-South Lake State Park has camping and trails around the pristine waters of twin lakes. The 1,100 acre campground with shaded, private campsites makes it easy to pitch your tent and enjoy the water. Another nearby lake, Colgate, is free to the public and a perfect lazy summertime setting for escaping the heat. The Windham Equestrian Center gives you the option of experiencing the area on horseback.
